JV football, golf post strong performances
WINTER SPRINGS — Seminole High School’s varsity girls volleyball team earned a four-set road victory over Winter Springs on Thursday, highlighting a strong week across Seminole athletics.
The Seminoles defeated Winter Springs 25-23, 25-23, 26-28, 25-15. Lia Hufford led Seminole with 14 kills, four aces, 13 digs and two blocks. Ciara Vazquez added 16 kills and five digs, whileThe victory came two days after Seminole swept Lake Mary, 3-0, winning 29-27, 25-14, 25-21. Hufford recorded 19 kills and nine digs, Vazquez had 12 kills, and Mattis finished with nine kills, 26 assists, eight digs and three blocks.
On the football field, Seminole’s junior varsity squad shut out Apopka 31-0 on Thursday. Freshman quarterback Andre Bennett accounted for two touchdowns, scoring once through the air and once on the ground. Junior running back Jacob Williams added two rushing touchdowns as the Seminole defense held Apopka scoreless from the opening snap through the final whistle.
Seminole’s girls golf team defeated Lake Mary 161-211 on Wednesday, with freshman Jasmine recording the best score of the day for the Seminoles.
The girls followed with another strong performance Thursday against Oviedo, winning 193-226. Senior Madison posted the best round of her season, finishing at 2 over par.
The boys golf team faced Oviedo on Thursday, falling 174-149 at Twin Rivers Golf Club. Playing on a rain-soaked course, Jackson Leonard led Seminole with a 3-over-par 39.
Seminole bowling competed in four matches during the week. The boys fell to Lake Howell 1,272-1,612 on Sept. 22 and Crooms 1,887-1,978 on Sept. 23. The girls lost to Lake Howell 1,114-1,261 and Crooms 1,186-1,449.
