LONGWOOD – Seminole scooped up a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown with 11 minutes left in the first half of their game at Lyman on Sept. 6. It would be nearly two hours later before the Noles would score again in their 43-13 win over the Greyhounds.
With the Noles up 13-0, Mother Nature took over with nine minutes left in half causing a weather delay that lasted an hour and 35 mins.
That seemed to spark the Seminoles who came out firing after the delay taking a 30-7 halftime lead.
“We told the team to stay motivated, realize the mission,” coach Karl Calhoun said of the delay. “Lightning is going to go away eventually, It’s Florida, we can’t control the weather it’s something we have to deal with, so we had to come out, finish the game and we did that tonight.”
Seminole started off the game holding Lyman’s offense at bay, taking over the ball on the host’s 43-yard line. Two minutes later, a 6-yard run by Khamani Robinson put Seminole on the board for the first time with four minutes left in the first quarter.
A sack followed by a blocked punt returned 50 yards for a touchdown by Kaeden Reyes put Seminole up 13-0 shortly before the delay.
Up 27-7, Seminole’s Javan Peterson had three of his game-high five sacks when he got to the Lyman quarterback on back-to-back-to-back plays. That set up a Liam Allen 36-yard field goal and the Noles 30-7 half time lead.
“Proud of all three phases (of the game) tonight,” Calhoun said. “The defense played good, our offense put points on the board and special team put points on the board again for us.”
On the night, Michael Clayton led the Noles through the air going completing 12 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. David Parks grabbed 58 yards two of those passes for 58 yards. Anthony Gay and Xavier Tucker each had 50 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Robinson led Seminole with 86 yards and three touchdowns.
“Very happy for our guys, after that long lightning delay they came out stayed focused and completed the game – even without the fourth quarter.”
The game was called shortly before the end of the third because of lightning.
Seminole is back at home on Sept 13 when it hosts Monarch. Game time is set for 7pm. Tickets can be found on GoFan.co
