Noles fall short, look ahead to district play

LAKE WALES, Fla. — After Seminole’s 38-29 road loss to Lake Wales, head coach Karl Calhoun Jr. is already focused on what’s next.

The Seminoles will host undefeated Lake Brantley (4-0) on Sept. 26 in a key district matchup.

“That’s the game that matters — the game that counts,” Calhoun said. “They’re 4-0, coming off a bye week, and it’s a district game. It’s what matters.”

Seminole is also dealing with several injuries, but Calhoun, like many coaches, isn’t using that as an excuse.

“We have to take care of business — plus it’s Senior Night,” he said. “We need to be determined. We have to approach this week with urgency.”

Despite being short-handed, Seminole kept things close against Lake Wales. After falling behind 10-0 early, the Seminoles responded when Davarian Jefferson took a direct snap 29 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.

The Highlanders extended their lead with another touchdown before Anthony Gay III broke free for a 46-yard scoring run up the middle.

Linebacker Rasheem Turner gave Seminole a boost for the second consecutive week, returning an interception 46 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown and a 29-24 lead.

But Lake Wales answered and eventually pulled away for the win.

“(Rasheem) has been our heart and soul this year,” Calhoun said. “There’s a reason he’s going to Arkansas State.”
