Friday night lights are so iconic, they inspired a movie. And just like a Hollywood ending, the hometown team delivered the perfect finish — pulling off a 16-10 Seminole win over previously undefeated and top-ranked Spruce Creek on Homecoming in dramatic fashion.

“At the end of the day, you have to find a way to win,” Seminole coach Karl Calhoun Jr. said. “Battered, bruised, injured and missing people, but guys found a way, stepped up and made great plays.”

One of those plays came with 2:33 left in the game. Facing fourth-and-7, quarterback Jeyson Williams threaded the ball over two defenders and found wide receiver Markel Barber — and from there, it became storybook.

Barber stretched his 6-foot-6 frame over defenders, hauled in the pass, and fought his way 10 yards into the end zone, giving the Seminoles a chance to tie. Kicker Austin Plebanski added the PAT to make it 10-all.

“(Barber) made a great play, (Williams) was rolling out and throwing off his back foot — we couldn’t have drawn it up any crazier,” Calhoun said. “Just a great play at the right time to send it to overtime.”

Spruce Creek nearly spoiled the ending, driving to the Seminole 20-yard line in the final seconds. The Hawks lined up for a potential game-winning field goal with 18 seconds remaining, but Seminole’s defense — which had been stout all night — came through again. The kick ricocheted off the outstretched hands of the defensive line, sending the game to overtime.

“Seminole has always been known for its defense,” Calhoun said. “Those two blocked field goals kept us in the game. I couldn’t be more proud of those boys for putting it all on their backs and making it happen.”

The defense held Spruce Creek’s high-powered offense to just 96 yards of total offense — a major drop from the Hawks’ 337-yard average entering the game.

On Seminole’s next possession, Anthony Gay III took a direct snap and powered 10 yards up the middle for the game-winning touchdown, sealing the storybook ending.

“We were riding his back — he took it up the middle on the first play,” Calhoun said. “It couldn’t feel better.”

Seminole will host Hagerty on Oct. 24 in a must-win district matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
