Recap: Swimmers with districts, football falls

OCALA — The Seminole High School boys’ and girls’ swimming teams swept the district championships Saturday, marking the first time since 2020 that both squads have repeated as champions.

The girls’ team rallied from a 26-point deficit heading into the 100-yard breaststroke, where Lindsey Annunziato led the comeback with a first-place finish in 1:05.47 — breaking a 15-year-old SHS record. Teammates Ava Ellis (fifth), Leila Nabi (sixth) and Naia Hair (10th) also contributed key points as the team surged into first place.

The girls sealed the victory with a strong performance in the 400 freestyle relay, as Vivian Swain, Gabby Pierson, Abigail Coleman and Delilah Parker secured the win to clinch the title. The championship is the fifth in school history for the SHS girls.

On the boys’ side, Seminole pulled ahead early with a dominant 1-2-4 finish in the 50 freestyle by Will McWard, John Slater and Timmy Samples. McWard also captured the 100 butterfly, while Samples, Slater and Ethan Pierson swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle. The boys capped the meet by winning all three relays, earning their 12th district title in 15 years.

In total, eight girls and nine boys advanced to the FHSAA Class 4A Region 1 Championship Meet in Ocala, along with all six SHS relay teams.

Both teams traded touchdowns before the half, Seminole failed to convert on a 2-point PAT to account for the Noles scoring on the night.

The regional meet is scheduled for Nov. 5.
