Game of firsts and positives as Noles kick off season

Author Haruki Murakami once wrote: “Everybody has to start somewhere….. Perfection doesn’t happen right away.”

For the Seminole girls Flag Football team, playing their first game in program history on Feb. 13 against DeLand was that start and leaving them room to grow.

The captains walked side-by-side to the center of the field for their first coin flip, at 12:57 pm.

Eight minutes later, running back Alysaa Braun lined up next to quarterback Olivia Burkshire in the back field. As the ball was snapped, the Noles senior quarterback took off to her left on a short gain for the first play from scrimmage.

“My philosophy coming into today there was going to be a first something – whether it be a first good, a first bad, or a first good and bad,” Seminole coach Eric Martin said after the Noles 20-0 loss. “All-in-all there was going to be a first something.

From there, Martin said he and the team have some growing to do.

After the first drive stalled ending with a punt, the Noles defense got its first when Freshman Tanasia Pollion intercepted a Bulldogs pass attempt and returned in 10 yards in the process.

“The girls and I will carry on that and build on that rather than the scoreboard. We just have a lot of positivity to build on.”

Seminole is back in action Feb 20 to start the regular season against Lake Howell. The game is set for 5pm at Lake Brantley.
